AVDAR Climber Triangle Set with rainbow ladder rungs and a climbing ramp

Pikler Triangle or a Full Climbing Frame

Compare · First climber

A Pikler triangle and a climbing gym are not a small one and a big one. They are two different kinds of afternoon.

I watched this in our own house before I could explain it cleanly. On the triangle, a child goes up, comes down, finds another way, and does it again. Nobody is handing them the next trick. On a full frame, the afternoon changes shape: someone is on the slide, someone is hanging, a sibling arrives, and the game is new because there are more things to do. Parents ask me which to buy as if the answer were age or price. The answer I actually give is: what kind of play do you have room for, and what kind of child is in front of you this year?

One movement, repeated

A Pikler triangle, in the strict sense, is a simple climbing triangle. Up, down, try a foot in a different place, come down again. The repetition is the toy. It suits a baby who is pulling up and a young toddler who is still learning that their body can solve a small problem without you demonstrating it. It also suits a room that cannot become a playground.

Our Climber Triangle Set is that shape. It is not a licensed Pikler, and I would rather say that plainly than let a search word do the talking. We added a double-sided slide, 100 × 40 cm, because the children we watched wanted a way down that was not only climbing backwards. The frame is birch, 60 × 90 × 70 cm. It does not fold. The limit is 50 kg. We suggest it for babies and young toddlers, roughly up to four.

If you want the quiet version of climbing, this is the one. It will not entertain a group. It will keep one child busy in a way that looks almost boring from the sofa, until you notice they have been at it for forty minutes. That boredom, from the outside, is concentration. I would not rush to replace it with something louder.

It does not fold behind a door. The space you give it on day one is the space it keeps. If you need a toy that disappears at bedtime, this is not that toy. Neither is a full frame. Be honest with the room before you are honest with the catalogue.

A small playground, and the floor it costs

A full frame adds things to do, and it adds floor you will not get back. Rainbow, Rock and Sun are each 120 × 110 × 110 cm once they are built, described for about 1.5 to 7 years, with room for three or four children. Rainbow is the coloured rack, the rings and the swing: the frame is rated to 200 kg, the swing separately to 50 kg. Please do not mix those numbers up. Rock is the climbing wall, araucaria, openings to find. Sun adds a platform and a curtain. Classic and Walnut are the same outside size. I would choose those for the wood. Their pages do not give an age, and I will not invent one so this comparison looks complete.

The cost is the tape on the floor. Mark 120 × 110 cm, then the run past a slide of about 120 cm. If the tape hits the sofa, the gym is the wrong toy no matter how many years you were promised. A triangle that is climbed every ordinary day beats a gym you dismantle in March because everyone is irritated. Once the tape fits, the way we choose among the large sets is in the buying guide.

How I would decide with you

First child, under about 3
The triangle
You want them to learn to climb, not to be entertained. The room is an apartment, or it only looks big in photos. Birch, 50 kg, slide included, not a licensed Pikler.
Siblings, or a long run to age 7
A full frame
The floor can spare 120 × 110 cm plus the slide. Then you are choosing wood and what is in the box, not "triangle or not."

A family that includes adults, and has almost no floor to give, is neither of these. That is the wall bar, from five, 234 cm on the wall, 100 kg. It is a ladder for the house. It is not a triangle that grew up.

Ask what the afternoon looks likeOne child, repeating one climb: triangle. A pile of children and a game that changes: full frame, if the tape fits.
  • ✓
Mat, and youUnder either of them. The standard they are tested to, EN71, ASTM and CPSIA, does not decide between them, and it does not sit in the room for you.
Can we start with the triangle and add a frame later?

Yes, and a lot of families should. The triangle is not a failed gym. It is the right first object. When the room and the sibling arrive, the frame is a second decision, not a correction.

My three-year-old seems bored of the triangle.

Watch for a week before you believe the boredom. Concentration looks dull from the kitchen. If they truly have stopped, and you have the floor, that is when a full frame earns itself. If you do not have the floor, the boredom is not a reason to buy something that will not fit.

Choose the kind of play, then the size

Triangle for one movement. A full frame when the room can hold a small playground.
