You are not choosing a photograph. You are choosing what your child will climb instead of the sofa, in the room you actually live in.
When our son started pulling himself up, the sofa became the gym. Then the bookshelf. Then the back of a chair we had not thought of as a ladder. Evgeny and I spent weeks with other wooden frames in the living room, putting them together, watching him, and seeing what was still standing after a month of every day. We built AVDAR because we could not find one we were happy to leave up. If you are standing where we stood, this is what I would walk you through before you order.
They are going to climb something
Toddlers climb because the body is asking. Grip. Balance. The small decision of whether the next hold is too far. On a wet Tuesday, that energy does not wait for the park. It goes into whatever is in the room.
An indoor frame does not make climbing safe by itself. I still put a mat down. I still stay in the room when they are small. The wood does not make me careless. What it does is give the climbing a place with a limit you can read, instead of a sofa you keep telling them to get off.
If you have already moved a footstool because they were using it as a step, you know the feeling. You are not buying a toy for a Sunday. You are buying the thing that will be there on the ordinary afternoons.
Start with the child, not the picture
The question I ask first is not which set is prettiest. It is what they can do this month. A frame for the child you hope they will be next year sits unused, or it is too much, and you end up nervous every time they go near it.
The triangle is where I send a family with one small child and a room that cannot spare a climbing gym. A Pikler triangle, strictly, is one movement: up, down, try again. Ours adds the slide, because the children we watched wanted a way down that was not only climbing backwards. It stays a first climber. It does not become a playground.
Measure the landing
Most of the disappointment I hear is about the room, not the wood. People fall in love with a photo taken in a studio, then try to land a slide in the gap beside the sofa.
-
✓Mark the frame, then keep goingA large set is 120 × 110 cm and 110 cm tall. The slide is about 120 cm on top of that. Tape the landing too. A child comes off a slide moving.
-
✓If the tape hits the sofa, it does not fitNo amount of liking the photograph fixes that. The triangle is the honest answer. It is 60 × 90 × 70 cm, and it does not fold, so the space you mark is the space it keeps.
-
✓Put a mat downEspecially on a hard floor. I do this in our own house. The frame is not a substitute for it.
-
✓Believe the box, not every photoA hammock, a tent or a baby swing in a picture is often sold on its own. Fall in love with what arrives.
Wood, and two different limits
Ask what the frame is made of, not only the slide. The slide can be a different wood. That is normal. The frame is what they stand on, and what the screws hold.
| Set | What you are really choosing |
|---|---|
| Classic | Solid pine. Ramp, ladder, rope net, swing. |
| Rock | Araucaria pine. A wall with geometric openings, so the climbing is the point. About 1.5 to 7. |
| Rainbow | Beech, the wood gyms have used for years, plus multilayer poplar on the materials list. Coloured rack, double-sided slide, rings, swing. Frame 200 kg. Swing 50 kg. About 1.5 to 7. |
| Sun | Same size, with a platform. In the box: frame, double-sided slide, pad, wooden swing, play curtain. Hammock, tent, baby swing, magnetic board, mattress and rings are separate. Beech, with multilayer poplar and birch. Free shipping in the United States. About 1.5 to 7. |
| Walnut | Black walnut and beech. The slide is pine plywood. Water-based finish. Frame 200 kg. |
Please read two numbers, not one. On Rainbow, Sun and Walnut the frame is rated to 200 kg and the swing to 50 kg. They are not the same limit. I have watched adults sit on the swing to "test it." That is the wrong part to test. The triangle is 50 kg for the whole set. The wall bar is 100 kg, which is why you can stretch on it and a toddler should not treat it as a first gym.
They are tested to EN71, ASTM and CPSIA. If you want the paperwork, the ASTM and EN71 reports are on the product page. A logo is not the same as a report. Neither one replaces you in the room while they are small.
What I would order, if I were you
A small apartment, one child under about three, still pulling up or just past it: the triangle. You will use it every day, and you will not spend the first week angry at the floor plan.
A living room that can spare 120 × 110 cm plus the slide, and a child who will still be on it at five, maybe with a brother or sister: Rainbow if you want the coloured rack and the rings. Rock if the climbing wall is the thing they will not get bored of. Sun if you want the platform and the curtain, and you are in the United States, where that set ships free.
If the wood is the reason you clicked, Classic is the pine one and Walnut is the dark one. I would not pretend those two pages give an age. Buy them because you want that wood in the room for years.
If the floor really cannot take a frame, and the people using it include you: the wall bar, from five, almost flat to the wall. It is a different purchase. It is not a gentler triangle.
The longer story of the Rainbow set alone, what we looked for before we made it, is here. That one is about one frame. This one is about choosing.
Questions parents actually ask me
Rock, Rainbow and Sun start at about 1.5 years, so 18 months is the beginning of that range, not the middle. Stay close. Mat underneath. If the room is tight, or they are still mostly pulling up, I would start with the triangle and not feel that you bought the "small" one. You bought the one they can use today.
You will hate it if the slide ends in a wall. Tape the floor before you pay. The triangle is the apartment answer. A full frame is fine in an apartment that has a real patch of floor, and a lot of families do.
They are made for indoors. If you take one out, put a mat under it so the wood is not sitting on wet ground, and cover it when it rains. I would not leave it out as garden furniture.
It is the shape people search for. It is not a licensed Pikler. A strict Pikler triangle is one climbing movement. Ours has the slide as well, and it is still the small first climber, not the full gym.
